What is the sales tax in my state? In 1921, West Virginia became the first U.S. state to enact a sales tax, which is a tax added onto the price of goods or services, displayed as a percentage of the sale price. There are only five states that do not currently have a sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon.
